Breaking news. After a 10 year consultation representatives of the EU Member States have adopted criteria for an EU Ecolabel on newsprint paper. Criteria includes production-related emissions into water and air or the use of energy and chemicals, plus the requirement of the newsprint paper to be composed of minimum 70% recycled material with the remaining virgin fibre to be entirely covered by “valid sustainable forest management and chain of custody certificates issued by an independent third party certification scheme such as FSC, PEFC or equivalent.”

In a nod to joined up thinking MEPS have called for a standardised ‘colour-coding’ system to help categorise different types of waste across Europe.  “A common EU standard for colour-coding categories of waste for sorting and recycling be agreed so as to facilitate and improve citizens' participation in and understanding of the waste process".  The theory being that this may assist Member States' efforts to increase recycling rates significantly and quickly.  Well, let's just watch this space.
